Trends2025_Trend1_Image1The U.S. Health Gap Grows

Chronic diseases, mental health challenges and age-related conditions like Dementia and Alzheimer's disease continue to rise despite advances in nutrition research and policy.1 While individuals are often the focus of nutrition interventions, broader social and environmental conditions have a significant impact on health and well-being. Creating a healthier society requires policy, systems and environmental approaches to shape and promote health.

Trends2025_Trend2_Image1Culture and Equity Are Prioritized in Health Interventions

Complex health problems require multipronged solutions to meet the needs of a diverse population. Life stage, access to nutritious food, education and lived experience are all part of the definition of what it means to be healthy. Increasingly, nutrition interventions are incorporating culturally relevant foods and traditions, as well as a health equity lens to meet people’s needs more effectively.

Key Points

Trends2025_Trend2_Image3Dairy Innovation to Meet Consumer Needs

  • In the United States, consumers are drinking less milk but turning to other dairy products such as butter, yogurt and new healthy, protein-rich snack products designed to meet a rising demand.12
  • Dairy companies are utilizing functional ingredients such as probiotics to appeal to consumers.13
  • Approximately 30% of Latino, Black, Asian and Pacific Islander populations report having lactose intolerance. Of these populations, more than two-thirds have never consumed lactose-free milk or dairy products, particularly baby boomers and Generation Xers.14
  • Lactose-free dairy innovation is increasing, with the introduction of products such as creamer, yogurt, cottage cheese and sour cream.15

Implications

  • As health and nutrition interventions increasingly consider health equity and cultural relevance, the dairy industry might benefit from tailoring products to diverse populations by offering culturally familiar flavors and formats to improve accessibility and appeal.
  • With millions facing barriers to primary care and with a growing interest in preventive health, the dairy industry has an opportunity to emphasize dairy foods’ nutritional and functional benefits such as high-quality protein and probiotics.
  • People are looking for products to improve their health, including high-protein and lactose-free options, which are aligned with product innovation and nutrition education. Both lactose-containing and lactose-free dairy products supply important nutrients that help fill nutrient gaps and can be tailored to meet cultural flavors and preferences.
