In this episode of Ask a Nutritionist, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Maria Frye answers the question, "Why is dairy an important food group?”

Nutrition has a big impact on the health and wellbeing of people from birth to adulthood. The current 2020-2025 dietary guidelines reinforce the important role dairy foods play in eating patterns throughout life because they are a great source of nutrients, including four nutrients of public health concern: potassium, calcium and vitamin D, as well as iodine for pregnant women. 

By encouraging the consumption of milk and dairy foods, we can close existing nutrient gaps with the number and type of milk and dairy foods available that provide many options to meet personal needs, tastes and cultural preferences.
