Dairy Council of California is excited to release The Healthy Eating TABLE, a publication that translates, amplifies & bridges the latest evidence in nutrition and dairy science. The newest edition focuses on older adult health and nutrition, highlighting dairy's role in a food forward approach to gut, bone, muscle and brain health. It also features critical nutrients for healthy active aging, and simple tips for older adults.

By 2040, 1-in-4 Californians will be over age 60, meaning the older adult population will grow by 142% from 2000-2040. The “oldest old” population (people over age 80) will grow by 238%.

Barriers and Facilitators for Older Adult Nutrition Interventions to Prevent Malnutrition

A recent review article examined what challenges or supports nutrition interventions for malnutrition among older adults living in noninstitutional municipal healthcare settings. Among its findings:

  • One key barrier is the lack of knowledge about nutrition recommendations for older adults, along with limited resources and time.
  • One key facilitator is providing nutrition education and training for healthcare professionals to build confidence and promote prioritizing nutrition interventions within healthcare settings.

Optimal Dietary Patterns for Healthy Aging

This study examined how diet impacts people's ability to live independently and maintain a good quality of life as they age. Individuals who consumed more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fats, nuts, legumes, and low-fat dairy during midlife were more likely to experience healthy aging.
