Consumer Methodology and Results
As with all of Dairy Council's nutrition
programs, this self-instructional program uses a behavior change
model to help instill positive lifestyle changes. However, this
program is unique in that it goes beyond nutrition and combines
physical activity with sensible food choices as a strategy for optimal
health and fitness. We wanted to find out if this approach is useful
to consumers and if they planned to make any changes as a result
of completing this paper and pencil program.
A majority of our 73 consumer respondents
were female. Most were between the ages of 26 and 49 years and 80%
were Caucasian, followed by Hispanics, then African Americans. Most
(86%) found the program easy to use and felt that it contained "just
the right amount of information". Favorite sections included the
"Reality Check" (a self-assessment section) and "Weight Management"
tips.
An overwhelming 77% said that they
would do something different about their diet and exercise habits.
Behaviors that individuals identified they would like to change
included to "stop skipping meals", to "eat a variety of foods" and
to "use 10 minute increments three times a day to set an exercise
pattern".
